Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’ about him enjoying an exclusive and
discretionary perk from Qantas during a tense
exchange with a journalist live on radio.
The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas
Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas and services
handed out by the airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.
Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was
‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked
hundreds of workers’.
Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about what they
think about that.’
Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,
700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case
brought by Transport Workers Union.
Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it
a ‘devastating day for thousands of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post.
‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.
Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you should be a
little purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’
Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as this and argued that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

Fellow Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather last year said he had shunned a Chairman’s Lounge membership and refuses to travel business class.
Earlier this year Mr Bandt’s flying habits led to controversy.

was revealed he frequently opts for business
class and has even taken private jets to election events
Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing tax payers with
the $23,000 bill.
One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March 7 but he also boarded a $15,000 private plane
along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route to attend his
party’s election campaign launch.
Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime
Minister Anthony Albanese being asked if he has included both his son and partner as
‘plus one’ Chairman’s Club members.
He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international one he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state
poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats after stating they aimed to
triple their representation in parliament.
With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear
to have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to the ALP.
However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has seen a massive 12.4
per cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

Today the star stepped away from MasterChef after 13 people including Newsnight host Kirsty Wark accused him of ‘wrong’ and inappropriate ‘sexualised’ behaviour during filming.
Ms Walk claims that on two occasions Wallace told stories and
jokes of a ‘sexualised nature’ in front of
contestants and crew while filming Celebrity MasterChef in 2011.
She said his gags and comments were ‘really, really in the wrong place’.
‘There were two occasions in particular where he used sexualised language in front of a number of people and it wasn’t as if anyone engaged with this.
It was completely one-way traffic. But I think people were uncomfortable
and something that I really did not expect to happen’, she
said.
Today Scottish broadcaster Aasmah Mir shared a picture of
herself during the 2017 Celebrity MasterChef series with the cryptic message:
‘Always keep your receipts’. It is not yet known if she has also
complained.

Wallace has been accused of taking his top off in front of a female worker saying he wanted to ‘give
her a fashion show’ and talking about his sex life to others.
On one occasion he allegedly told a junior female colleague
he wasn’t wearing any boxer shorts under his jeans.
The BBC has revealed that 13 people, including Ms Wark, have complained about his conduct while working with him over a 17-year period across five shows,
from 2005 to 2022.
The BBC claims that Wallace walked away from MasterChef today after BBC News sent a letter to his agent on Tuesday, setting out allegations
from 13 people and giving him a right of reply. They say he was warned after a complaint was raised in 2018, but new historical claims
emerged over the summer of 2024.
Wallace, 60, is ‘committed to fully cooperating throughout the process’, the show’s production company Banijay UK said.
But he will be on BBC One as usual tonight because MasterChef: The Professionals, which
is already recorded, will transmit as planned
and into December. MasterChef’s Christmas specials will also still be broadcast.
Mr Wallace is yet to comment today – but at the time of the announcement this afternoon he did take
to Instagram to share his recipe for prawn tacos with pineapple salsa.
But in October Gregg vehemently denied that he had made inappropriate sexual
comments towards women, declaring that he would never
‘flirt with’ or ‘hit on’ another woman and saying: ‘I didn’t say anything sexual’.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved
by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people.

to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and

LONDON, May 11 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s $16
billion bid for smaller rival Swedish Match highlights the
urgency among cigarette makers to tap new and potentially less harmful alternatives as regulation and
health concerns snuff out traditional smokes.
Marlboro maker Philip Morris agreed on Wednesday to
buy Swedish Match, one of the world’s biggest makers of oral nicotine
products. These include Snus – a sucked tobacco product the firm says is less harmful than smoking – as well as Zyn nicotine pouches,
which are used the same way and tobacco-free.
Both are niche products, but are growing, with Swedish Match’s almost 50%
share of the global tobacco-free oral nicotine market
putting it ahead of both British American Tobacco and Altria Group in that category.
Thomas Russo, managing partner at Gardner Russo
& Gardner which owns shares in both Philip Morris (PMI) and Swedish Match, welcomed the tie-up as opening a «new field» for
PMI’s smoke-free products, which include iQOS tobacco heating devices.
«It’s a deal that would continue industry consolidation that’s been underway for the past decade,» he said.
Russo’s U.S. investment firm has a 0.47% stake in PMI and a
0.09% holding in Swedish Match, according to Refinitiv data.
Tobacco companies have scrambled over the past decade to find new markets as regulators crack down on cigarettes and more people
quit smoking due to the health risks.
Snus – a Swedish-style snuff – is a moist, smoke-free tobacco product that is placed
behind the upper lip, either loose or in portioned
sachets. The global market for snus increased from
7,000 tonnes in 2008 to nearly 10,000 tonnes in 2019, according to data firm Euromonitor.
In 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the marketing of Swedish
Match’s Snus as less harmful than cigarettes.
DEALMAKING
The possible PMI-Swedish Match deal is the latest in a string of investments by the $900 billion-plus tobacco industry
in potentially lower risk products, including e-cigarettes and tobacco
heating devices.
Euromonitor estimates the global market for smokeless tobacco,
e-vapour products and heated tobacco was about $67 billion in 2021, nearly three times
the size it was in 2016.
PMI Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said last year his company had spent more than $8 billion on reduced risk products since it began developing them
a decade ago.
He said then that PMI would reach its 2025 target for 50% of sales from smoke-free products by
growing its existing business, rather than acquisitions.
But buying Swedish Match, would give PMI – which was spun off from Altria
in 2008 – an established U.S. market and distribution system, Bernstein analyst Callum
Elliot said.
«That said, the deal hasn’t gone through yet,» Elliot added.
«I imagine that Swedish Match is a business that could be appealing to other players within the industry, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a counter bid from other companies, particularly Japan Tobacco Inc.»
A Japan Tobacco spokesperson said the company does not comment on rumours or speculation.
COMPETITION
PMI, the No.3 cigarette company in 2020 after China National Tobacco Corp and British American Tobacco (BAT), has not been alone in its attempts to expand beyond
combustible tobacco.
News of its move on Swedish Match sent Altria shares down about 9% on Tuesday
as investors worried about a step up in competition for
the U.S. company.
In 2018, Altria bought a 35% stake in e-cigarette company Juul Labs Inc for $12.8 billion. A year later, it bought 80% of Burger Söhne Holding AG, allowing it
to distribute the Swiss company’s On! oral nicotine pouches.
Other rivals are watching with interest.
«We think a multi-category strategy in tobacco and nicotine is the right one,» BAT’s chief
marketing officer Kingsley Wheaton told Reuters on Tuesday.
BAT is the world No.2 in tobacco-free oral nicotine products behind
Swedish Match. Sales at its «new categories» division jumped 51% to
2.05 billion pounds ($2.52 billion) last year,
helped by its e-cigarettes and oral nicotine products.
The London-listed company is aiming for the division to reach revenues of 5 billion pounds, and profitability, by 2025.
«As our business transforms, our portfolio transforms, and, so too, our competitive landscape will evolve,» Wheaton said.
While PMI is pursing Swedish Match, other rivals prefer to go it alone.
Imperial Brands is focusing on developing its own products in the heated tobacco market, particularly in Europe,
a spokesperson said.
But there is still all to play for.
«The whole next-generation product space is still very nascent – no one in the industry has yet created any next generation product which really, fully replicates the experience of a smoked cigarette or a traditional cigarette,»
the spokesperson said.

wondering: How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning,
billion-dollar film with the same creative team go wrong?
Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for
a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s
record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.
A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first
movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.
But the homecoming glow was short-lived,
and the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score
dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first
weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a meager half star out of five possible.
‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or
$50 million opening for a less expensive movie would
be a solid debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how
pricey it was to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others
have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros. released the
film in 4,102 locations in North America. About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its
total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two
weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend,
bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over
$100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five,
Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and
Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the
top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped
with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year,
but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to
narrow the box office deficit.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that
it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie
Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first
film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and
delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance
numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called »Harlequin,’ alongside the film.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was
deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially
when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered
comic book characters on the big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to
want to know what they´re getting when they´re going
to the theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem
started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical
sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject
of much discourse, then about whether it might send
the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And
yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was about.
Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and
best director, and three wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took
the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released
Monday.

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans
of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to
defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture
One user marvelled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’
It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of negative reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from
the furore over the film, insiders claim.
Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at
the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.
Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.
‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked
that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics
before it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.
‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the DC comics
fan base.’
They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local council.
Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court,
and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to
remove a single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway.
The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August.
They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove
refused the request on the grounds the tree was not dead or deceased.
‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting.
‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse out.’
The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the
tree to be removed on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.
They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property.

Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree’s odd placement also made it
difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a
nearby intersection with Bay View Terrace.
After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting, councillor
Douglas Jackson said it was a ‘good outcome’.
‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation, but also
matches the council’s needs at the same time by ensuring that there is
tree cover on the verge of that property,’ he said.
Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a
policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any mature
trees on private property without council approval.
Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire
of Peppermint Grove would ‘take a common sense approach’ to the issue.
‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to
take a common sense approach to issues,’ Mr Carey told the West Australian.
‘And I understand people are passionate about trees.
But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’
According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion – which is built
on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River
– the sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite
theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris
and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of
fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe
Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes
— every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back
a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to
vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to «a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.»
She added, «Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.»

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights,
Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where

«It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,» Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
«I do think that abortion is murder,» said Pedro Lopez,

conceded, «but that’s very small.»
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered
the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
«People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,» he said.

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers
normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal government.
«I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,» Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very
heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the
White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona,
with the Republican holding a very narrow
lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong
support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be «helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,» said Jenny Brian, a
professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to
the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes «a broad spectrum of views on the topic,» an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about
«government interference,» she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also «moderates and even many Democrats,» said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent
toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the
partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is «running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.»

AKRON, Ohio (AP) – Bowen Hardman had 20 points in Akron’s 101-48 victory NCAA-Division III-member SUNY-Brockport on Saturday.
Hardman went 8 of 14 from the field (4 for 10 from
3-point range) for the Zips (6-2). James Okonkwo scored 12 points and added 16 rebounds.
Nate Johnson shot 5 for 8, including 2 for 4 from beyond the arc to finish with 12 points,
while adding six rebounds.
The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by Tony Arnold, who finished with 11 points
and eight rebounds. Jacob Oka added six points for SUNY-Brockport.
Christian Amica also had five points.
Akron took the lead with 18:22 left in the first half and never
looked back. The score was 56-24 at halftime, with Hardman racking

The low-budget thriller, made for about $2 million and written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood fest, which has
received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.
Holding on to second place was The Wild Robot, an animated adventure about a robot named Roz who is stranded on a small island after
being shipwrecked. There, she bonds with the animals,
who are her new neighbors, and begins taking care of an orphaned goose.

DAMASCUS, Dec 8 (Reuters) – Syrian rebels seized the capital Damascus unopposed on Sunday after a lightning advance that sent
President Bashar al-Assad fleeing to Russia after a
13-year civil war and six decades of his family’s autocratic rule.
In one of the biggest turning points for the Middle East in generations, the fall of
Assad’s government wiped out a bastion from which Iran and Russia exercised influence across the Arab world.
Moscow gave asylum to Assad and his family, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s ambassador to international organizations in Vienna, said
on his Telegram channel.
His sudden overthrow, at the hands of a revolt partly backed by Turkey and with roots in jihadist Sunni Islam, limits Iran’s ability to spread weapons
to its allies and could cost Russia its Mediterranean naval base.
It could allow millions of refugees scattered
for more than a decade in camps across Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan to finally return home.
For Syrians, it brought a sudden unexpected end to a war in deep freeze for years,
with hundreds of thousands dead, cities pounded to dust and an economy hollowed by global sanctions.
«How many people were displaced across the world? How many people lived in tents? How many drowned in the seas?» the top rebel commander, Abu Mohammed al-Golani,
told a huge crowd at the medieval Umayyad Mosque in central Damascus,
referring to refugees who died trying to reach Europe.
«A new history, my brothers, is being written in the entire region after this great victory,» he said, adding that with hard work Syria would be «a beacon for the Islamic nation.»
The Assad police state – known since his father seized power in the 1960s as one of the harshest in the Middle
East with hundreds of thousands of political prisoners – melted away overnight.
Bewildered and elated inmates poured out of jails after rebels blasted open their cells.
Reunited families wept in joy. Newly freed prisoners were
filmed at dawn running through the Damascus streets holding up the fingers of both
hands to show how many years they had been in prison.
«We toppled the regime!» a voice shouted as one prisoner yelled and skipped
with delight.
The White Helmets rescue organization said it had
dispatched five emergency teams to the notorious Sedhaya prison to search for hidden underground cells believed to hold
detainees.
DEFACED ASSAD IMAGES
As the sun set in Damascus without Assad for the first time,
roads leading into the city were mostly empty, apart from motorcycles
carrying armed men and rebel vehicles caked with mud as camouflage.
Some men could be seen looting a shopping centre on the road between the
capital and the Lebanese border. The myriad checkpoints lining the road to Damascus were empty.
Posters of Assad were torn at his eyes. A burning Syrian military truck was
parked diagonally on the road out of the city.
A thick column of black smoke billowed from the Mazzeh neighbourhood,
where Israeli strikes earlier had targeted Syrian state
security branches, according to two security sources.
Intermittent gunfire rang out in apparent celebration.
Shops and restaurants closed early in line with a curfew imposed by the
rebels. Just before it came into effect, people could be seen briskly walking home with stacks
of bread.
Earlier, the rebels said they had entered the capital with no sign of army deployments.
Thousands of people in cars and on foot congregated at
a main square in Damascus waving and chanting «Freedom.»
People were seen walking inside the Al-Rawda Presidential
Palace, with some leaving carrying furniture. A motorcycle was parked on the intricately-laid parquet floor of a gilded hall.
The Syrian rebel coalition said it was working to complete
the transfer of power to a transitional governing body with
executive powers.
«The great Syrian revolution has moved from the stage of struggle to overthrow the Assad regime to the struggle to build a Syria together that befits the sacrifices of its people,» it added in a statement.
Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, prime minister under Assad, called for free elections and said he
had been in contact with Golani to discuss the transitional period.
Golani, whose group was once Syria’s branch of al Qaeda
but has softened its image to reassure members of minority sects and foreign countries,
said there was no room for turning back.
ARAB WORLD STUNNED
The pace of events stunned Arab capitals and raised concerns about more instability on top of the Gaza war.
U.S. President Joe Biden, in a televised address,
cheered Assad’s fall but acknowledged that it was also a moment of risk and uncertainty.
«As we all turn to the question of what comes next, the United States will work with our partners and the stakeholders in Syria to help them seize an opportunity to manage the risk,» Biden said.
The U.S. Central Command said its forces conducted dozens of
airstrikes targeting known Islamic State camps and operatives
in central Syria on Sunday.
Later in the day Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said he
spoke with Turkish Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler,
emphasizing that the United States is watching closely.
Jubilant supporters of the revolt crowded Syrian embassies around
the world, lowering red, white and black Assad-era flags and replacing them with the green, white and black flag flown by
his opponents.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Assad’s fall was thanks to blows Israel had
dealt to Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, once the lynchpin of Assad’s
security forces.
«The barbaric state has fallen,» French President Emmanuel
Macron said.
When the celebrations fade, Syria’s new leaders face the daunting task of trying to deliver stability to a diverse country that will need billions of dollars in aid.
During the civil war, which erupted in 2011 as an uprising against Assad, his forces and their Russian allies bombed cities to rubble.
The refugee crisis across the Middle East was one of the biggest of modern times and caused a political reckoning in Europe when a million people arrived in 2015.
In recent years Turkey had backed some rebels in a small redoubt in the northwest and along its border.
The United States, which still has 900 soldiers on the ground, backed a Kurdish-led alliance that fought Islamic State
jihadists from 2014-2017.
The biggest strategic losers were Russia and Iran, which intervened in the war’s
early years to rescue Assad, helping him recapture most territory and all major cities.
The front lines were frozen four years ago under a deal Russia and Iran reached with Turkey.
But Moscow’s focus on its war in Ukraine and the blows to Iran’s allies following
the war in Gaza – particularly the decimation of
Hezbollah by Israel over the past two months – left Assad with scant

Research by the American Diabetes Association has shown that a reasonable quantity of red wine may reduce the blood sugar levels of diabetics for up to twenty four hours,

diabetes. As well as this, studies have shown that those who drank red wine on a weekly basis,
were 30% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those
who never drank red wine. Scientific analysis has determined that the

inflammation, which can lead to the development of diabetes.
